Progressive Insurance announced recently that it has purchased the naming rights for Jacobs Field, home of the Cleveland Indians ballclub. The $3.6 million, 16-year deal will ensure that Progressive is the "official auto insurer" and the only one featured in ballpark signage during home games. The deal reflects the thought process for insurers as they seek to align their brands with local traditions.
New Englanders may remember the Indians as the Red Sox’ ultimately unsuccessful opponents in the American League Championship Series this past fall. The Ohio-based company's still mum on entering the Massachusetts personal auto market, despite final approval of another license to write here. The Tribe may have Progressive, but Boston nabbed the 2007 World Series. Fair trade? You decide.
