There seems to be a widening stream of mistrust between independent insurance agents and insurers over a variety of issues in New England – with agents most concerned that voicing their opinions would be detrimental to their livelihood. High on the list of divisive topics are wind deductibles on homeowners insurance, credit scoring and, in Massachusetts, auto insurance reform. For companies opting for agents as their method of distribution, this is a business relationship that works for both sides. However, it needs to be more even-handed. Insurers expecting to get the best business and service from their agents won’t get anywhere by perpetuating a culture of fear.
