The Road Finally Taken

By: ELA (Wed, Jun/03/2009)

This week brought the news that the Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley has settled with Progressive Insurance over inaccurate quotes that were handed out last year over the insurer’s Web site. It was big news ... some six months ago. Now, Coakley has reminded us that consumers might have gotten the mistaken idea that Progressive had dramatically lower rates and has procured a $120,000 settlement over the idea.

That’s all well and good, but shouldn’t that have been the job of the Division of Insurance? You know, the state insurance regulators, the ones whose responsibility it is to ensure that Progressive was following the rules? I recognize that there is a great deal of overlap between the Division and the AG’s office on insurance oversight issues, but it seems that this should have been addressed several months ago through the typical regulatory channels.

Although other insurance compliance issues are taken up by the AG’s office as well, the public needs to know that the Division is the one with its eye on how insurers are complying with the laws and regulations of the state.
